March 2023 – See Yourself, Leaning Back on Jesus’ Chest

There is a picture of John and Jesus shared in Scripture that I’ve recently been seeing as an invitation:

Now there was leaning on Jesus’ bosom one of His disciples, whom Jesus loved. Simon Peter therefore motioned to him to ask who it was of whom He spoke. Then, leaning back on Jesus’ breasthe said to Him, “Lord, who is it?”

– John 13:23-25 (NKJV)
There is no doubt that Jesus was a friend to John. John repeatedly referred to himself as the disciple Jesus loved. (See John 13:23; 19:26; 20:2; 21:7; and 21:20.)

But the image of John actually leaning back on Jesus’ chest when Jesus was troubled (John 13:21) was a picture of more than Jesus being a friend. That was also a picture of John being Jesus’ friend in return.

There’s a Proverb in Scripture that’s always driven home to me truths about the deep goodness of Jesus as a friend: … there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother (Proverbs 18:24, NASB).

I’ve been blessed with a very dear brother, so that Proverb has always deeply communicated to me the point of just how close Jesus can be, and how treasured having the friendship of Jesus is.

I wonder… Is it possible that in addition to Jesus being that kind of friend to others, that John was also to Jesus the kind of friend who sticks closer than a brother? I don’t think it’s a stretch.

And then I wonder… As a friend to Jesus, how much closer could I “stick”? I want to find out.

It feels like the invitation is open. And James 4:8 makes it clear that the next move is ours.

Can you see yourself leaning back on Jesus’ chest?

Let’s.
