Peace

Peace.

There is an actual supernatural peace that you can feel protecting your heart and mind:

And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:7 (NASB)

This is about that.

Scripture speaks about what peace is, and how to receive it. Jesus also teaches how we can keep it, and what we can do with it.

There are more than 90 mentions of “peace” in the New Testament, and more than 300 mentions of “peace” in the whole Bible.

Here are some selected verses, along with my reflections.

Romans 15:33, 16:20; 1 Corinthians 14:33; 2 Corinthians 13:11; Philippians 4:9; 1 Thessalonians 5:23; 2 Thessalonians 3:16; Hebrews 13:20

God is the God of peace.

Isaiah 9:6

Prince of Peace is one of the names of Jesus.

Luke 2:14

Peace is a very high priority. It is one of two messages announced when Jesus came to earth as a baby.

But the Helper, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and remind you of all that I said to you. Peace I leave you, My peace I give you; not as the world gives, do I give to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled, nor fearful.

John 14:26-27 (NASB)

Matthew 10:13 and Luke 10:4-6

Peace is active and can be shared. I can give peace as a blessing, on a house, on a person. It will “rest on him”—or return to me.

Mark 4:39

Peace affects the atmosphere.

Mark 5:34

Jesus gave peace to a frightened woman who’d just been cured.

In this verse, Jesus says the woman had already been made well, but Jesus then added peace—and more—to her. He was speaking more of what she needed to be whole. He sought her out, saw her, spoke blessing to her, loved her, commended her faith, confirmed her healing, replaced her fear with peace, and declared that he wanted her to keep living healed.

Luke 1:79; (see also Romans 3:17)

God made a way to guide us into peace: “To guide our feet into the way of peace.”

Luke 7:50

To a forgiven woman: “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”

Luke 8:48

To a healed woman: “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace.”

Luke 24:36

Jesus gave peace to a number of his followers: to the eleven and those who were with them (Luke 24:33), plus Cleopas and the other person who returned from Emmaus (Luke 24:13, 18, 33-36).

Distinction: “Peace to men on whom his favor rests” (Luke 2:14), but a sword to the world (Matthew 10:34)

John 16:33

Jesus makes a way to have peace in Him.

John 20:19, 21

When Jesus’ followers were afraid, Jesus came to them and gave them peace.

Then Jesus gave them peace again.

Look what a top priority peace is: He gave it before he sent them. He gave it before he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” And he gave it not just to them: see Ephesians 2:17.

Acts 9:31

Peace and comfort of the Holy Spirit were two gifts of God that helped build up and increase the church.

Acts 10:36; see also Romans 5:1 and 8:6

Peace is really only available through Jesus Christ. It is the peace of God. The punishment that brought our peace was upon Christ (Isaiah 53:5), and peace with God and from God is central to the good news:

  • Christ is our peace: Ephesians 2:14-15.
  • The gospel (“good news”) of peace: Ephesians 6:15.
  • Jesus made peace available for us through his blood: Colossians 1:20.

Romans 1:7

Look at the high priority the apostles Paul and others place on peace. Paul and others impart it—through written words—to the church, repeatedly: Romans 1:7, 2:10, 15:13 (leads to hope); 1 Corinthians 1:3; 2 Corinthians 1:2; Galatians 1:3; Ephesians 1:2, 6:23; Philippians 1:2; Colossians 1:2; 1 Thessalonians 1:1; 2 Thessalonians 1:2, 3:16; 1 Timothy 1:2; 2 Timothy 1:2; Titus 1:4; Philippians 1:3; 1 Peter 1:2, 5:14; 2 Peter 1:2; 3 John 1:15; Jude 1:2; Revelation 1:4.

Galatians 5:22

Peace is a fruit of the Spirit.

Philippians 4:6-7

The peace of God guards our hearts and minds. It surpasses comprehension. See verse 6 for important keys to living in this peace.

Romans 14:19

We have a role in peace. (See also 1 Corinthians 16:11; 2 Corinthians 13:11; Ephesians 4:3; 1 Thessalonians 5:13; 2 Thessalonians 3:12; 2 Timothy 2:22; Hebrews 12:14; James 3:18; 1 Peter 3:11, 14.)

Colossians 3:15

We can “let the peace of Christ” “rule in [our] hearts” and “be thankful.”

Hebrews 7:2

Jesus is a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek (Hebrews 7:17), a king whom this verse calls “king of peace.”

Hebrews 12:11

A peaceful fruit: righteousness

James 3:17

Godly wisdom is peace-loving.

2 John 1:3

God’s peace is tangible.

… letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace.

Romans 8:6 (NLT)

… the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace.

Romans 8:6 (NASB)

Isaiah 53:5

The punishment that brought us peace was upon him.

Christ purchased peace for us and now offers it to us as a gift.

Numbers 6:24-26

A blessing of peace from God
