What I Pray After Visiting the Moon

Sample of moon rock on display at Space Center Houston

I’m told there are 8 lunar rocks on earth that are available to be touched by the public. And that’s how I happened to touch this piece of the moon at Space Center Houston a couple of months ago.

So, I didn’t visit all of the moon. Just some samples of it.

But, you know, it was seeing what the moon is made of that has really stayed with me.

What Wasn’t in The Moon

As a gardener who’s had my hands in the earth’s soil for most of the growing seasons of my lifetime, I really noticed what wasn’t in the moon samples.

The moon was devoid of the clay and dust that Genesis 2:8, 3:19, and 2 Corinthians 4:7 talk about humans being made from. (And, I realized, that animals and plants are made from, too.)

Instead, the moon seemed to be made of only exactly the kind of stuff it would need to be made of to do the jobs God created it for:

  • Genesis 1:14-18 (NKJV)

Then God said, “Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night, and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years; and let them be for lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth”; and it was so. Then God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night. He made the stars also. God set them in the firmament of the heavens to give light on earth, and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good.

  • Psalm 104:19 (NKJV)

He appointed the moon for seasons;

The sun knows its going down.

  • Jeremiah 31:35 (NKJV)

Thus says the LORD,

Who gives the sun for a light by day,

The ordinances of the moon and the stars for a light by night….

This Stuff Doesn’t Look Like the Moon

Something else I noticed was the vast difference between the appearance of the actual material that the moon is made of, and the bright, shiny moon I had seen in the night sky all my life.

The only way the collection of elements that makes up the moon could produce the beautiful pearly light that’s cast onto the earth at night is by reflecting a greater light.

Before and After the Moon

According to Genesis 1:3 and 1:14-15, there was already light on earth for several days before God made the sun and moon. That’s sure interesting to consider.

And, although God likes the moon (Genesis 1:18), we won’t need it forever. Revelation 21 describes a future home for us where neither the sun or moon will be necessary (Revelation 21:23), because God’s glory illuminates that place and Jesus is its light.

Two Prayers for You

Two prayers arose in me as I considered all of this:

You and I were designed and created by God for and with specific purposes, and we were made exactly as needed to carry out those purposes. May you and I fulfill the unique purposes God has created us for.

Considering what I’m made of or what any human is made of won’t give the full picture. We can only carry out our true destiny in relationship with the greater light, who is God. May you and I reflect the greater light of the glory of God, and of the Lamb, Jesus.
